Painting is a lonely business. Without workmates in the studio I constantly turn to podcasts to help keep me motivated, to keep learning and keep the inspiration flowing.
Whilst I do venture into the wider world of podcasts (yes, I love Oprah) for the most part I try to stick with podcasts designed specifically for working artists. Some cross the boundary into exploring ‘creative businesses’, but having run a my own graphic design business for many years, I find the two disciplines very different.
So, here’s a quick hit list for artists looking for daily inspiration in the ears.
1. Art For Your Ear: The Jealous Curator
FOCUS: The Artists Journey and Inspiration
The Jealous Curator is hands down the best art blog out there. Artist/writer Danielle Krysa has been bringing us the best of daily art curations on her website for almost 10 years. She was one of the first and most certainly one of the best. Now she brings all of her wisdom and cuteness to her quirky podcast where she interviews artists from all over the globe in a gorgeously relaxed and entertaining style. Usually its like listening to old friends at a kitchen table. Always fun. Always informative. I love this one.
2. Artists Helping Artists
FOCUS: Practical advice on how to market and sell your art
Occasionally this podcasts drifts into the realm of two middle age women just blabbing away. The creator Leslie Saeta seems currently preoccupied with a new venture ‘Her Hundred Year Old House” which creeps into the conversation a little more than I would like. BUT…..if you are working at trying to promote your art work this series of podcasts does have a lot of great content. Leslie and her co-hosts really provide practical, useful advice on how to get organised, structure your life as an artist and how to find opportunities to show and sell your work. Their recent podcast “Twenty Things You Can Do To Sell More Art Over the Holidays” was particularly helpful for me.
3. Savvy Painter
FOCUS: Techniques and the practice of being an artist.
Hosted by artist Antrese Wood, this podcast is serious about art and artistic careers, featuring in-depth interviews with a diverse range of artists as well as tactical advice on the business of art. If you following the link to the Savvy Painter website, podcasts are categorised into Artists, Marketing, Authors and Galleries so you can quickly skip into the areas that interest you. A little less kooky than the previous two podcasts but jam packed with stuff about art.
4. Your Creative Push
FOCUS: The struggle.
This podcast is not exclusively related to art but there is something about the host that I really, really like. I normally skip through the feed and listen only to the interviews with artists. Some days I honestly feel like the host is on the other end of the phone desperately trying to make MY art career succeed. Youngman Brown seems so genuine and humble that I can almost forgive him for saying “I love that” after almost comment made by his guests.) This podcast is all about the artistic struggle and about finding the courage to get out there and do what we do. Its perfect on days when the inevitable “what am I doing????” breakdowns occur.
5. The Abundant Artist
FOCUS: Making Money
Cory Huff sells courses on How to Make Money Selling Your Art, so there are a lot of links to his courses throughout this content. That said, this podcast provides a boat load of free advice, great interviews and practical tips about selling online, using social media and all those other things we need to do to actually make some money. You can’t really skip this podcast if you are serious about a profitable artistic career. His podcasts feature interviews with successful artists who impart valuable advice on the business of art.
